In praise of future leaders

Hundreds of high school students explored the halls of the capitol last week during the annual exercise in government known as Girls State and Boys State. The week-long programs, which are sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, offer rising seniors the chance to form a government, run for office, and write and vote on legislation.

Several Carroll County students have been named Presidential Scholars for the spring 2022 semester at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Students must achieve a 4.0 GPA with a minimum course load of 12 credit hours to qualify as a Presidential Scholar.

Local students elected to office at Boys State

Several local students have been elected to city and state offices as part of the 81st annual session of Arkansas Boys State at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, where students build a mock government structure, including16 mock cities each with their own city council, vice mayor and mayor.

Eureka Springs Middle School teacher receives classroom grant

Maria Ellis, a mathematics and robotics teacher at Eureka Springs Middle School has been awarded a classroom grant by the Arkansas State Teachers Association. The $500 classroom grant will be applied toward the purchase of three Sphero BOLT coding robots for her students.

This listing includes individuals who have been booked into the Carroll County Detention Center. Charges may be reduced or dropped, and individuals are presumed innocent until being found guilty. As of Friday, June 10, a total of 109 inmates were being housed in the detention center.

The Carroll County Senior Activity and Wellness Center is located at 202 W. Madison Ave. in Berryville. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday. The suggested donation for ages 60 and up is $4. There is a $6 charge for those under 60. Menus are subject to change as needed.

Tyler Crawford of Green Forest earned a certificate of proficiency in criminal justice during the academic year 2021-2022 at Southern Arkansas University Tech in East Camden, the school has announced.

This week our Pet of the Week is Mishka, an adult grey tabby. She is a very sweet and loving kitty. Mishka also has a really cute chirp she gives out when she is getting petted by someone she loves. Mishka will make a great addition to any family. You can meet Mishka at the Good Shepherd Humane Society Adoption Center on Highway 62.
