Early voting will begin Tuesday, June 14, for the June 21 Republican preferential primary runoff election. Voters who chose a Republican or nonpartisan judicial ballot in the May 24 primary are eligible to vote in the Republican runoff, as are registered voters who did not vote in the primary.

American Legion Post 9 of Eureka Springs held its annual Memorial Day ceremonies Monday, May 30, honoring the memory of America’s fallen military personnel. Army veteran Vince Eastwood, who served in Operation Desert Storm and is now a board member with Ozark Mountain Veterans, told those in attendance that Memorial Day is not a happy occasion.

A Berryville man faces a lengthy list of charges after allegedly leading officers on a high-speed chase across the Madison County line in a stolen vehicle. Jacob Odell Treat, 23, was booked into the Carroll County Detention Center in Berryville on Tuesday, May 25, on charges of theft of vehicle, fleeing, reckless driving, driving on a suspended driver’s license, failure to appear, hold for Madison County, criminal mischief, aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, disregarding traffic signals, failure to yield or stop at sign and failure to use a turn signal.

Active cases of COVID-19 in Carroll County are still on the rise, with 37 reported by the Arkansas Department of Health on Monday. Statewide, the number of active cases rose to 4,936, a nearly 27-percent increase since May 31.

A Green Forest man is free on bond after being arrested for allegedly raping a young girl in 2012. Marco Antonio Figueroa Arana was arrested by Green Forest police on May 26.

Camp Harvest is participating in the USDA Summer Food Service Program this summer. Meals will be provided to all children 18 and under without charge. Meals will be eaten on site at the following dates and times:

On May 21, the Eureka Springs Abendschone Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution paid tribute at the Eureka Springs Cemetery to mark the graves of interred past chapter members. Patriotic American decorations and flags (with NSDAR logos) were placed next to the graves of the chapter’s founding leaders. There are 34 known members’ graves in Eureka Springs cemetery. Organizing members honored were Ruth Fuller Cross; Ruth’s mother, May Obenshain Fuller; Dorothy Fuller Mathews; and Beulah Pitts McBee (May’s niece). The gravesite of longstanding member Fanny Henderson Russ also was honored. Obenshain is said to be the “Americanized” version of the name Abendschone. GPS coordinates are recorded for each member’s gravesite so that the chapter can honor them at future events. This year the flags remained at the gravesites through Memorial Day. Charles Moss Horton of Berryville and Anna Rae Blach of Green Forest were among 942 students who graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences during ceremonies held May 21 in Little Rock.

Rachel Pittman was selected from 24 applications received from writers across the United States to receive the 2022 Moondancer Fellowship from the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow. The fellowship was open to poets, fiction writers, playwrights, essayists, columnists, memoirists, and screenwriters who expressed their love of nature and concern for the environment through their writing.
