David Writer will be the Republican nominee for Carroll County Judge in the November general election. Writer defeated Bud Phillips in the June 21 preferential primary runoff to win the Republican nomination, according to unofficial final results announced by the Carroll County Clerk’s office.

For the fifth time in six years — and the third consecutive year — the Carroll County News was awarded first place for general excellence among medium weekly newspapers in the Arkansas Press Association’s 2022 Better Newspaper Editorial contest.

A recently completed countywide reappraisal project will result in higher property taxes for many Carroll County residents, but there is some good news. Dennis Wells, the Carroll County appraisal manager for Arkansas CAMA Technology Inc., told the county quorum court at its regular meeting on Monday, June 20, that property values in the county have increased significantly in the five years since the last reappraisal was conducted.

For the past year, longtime Berryville Mayor Tim McKinney has served as president of the Arkansas Municipal League. McKinney’s election last year marked the first time a mayor of Berryville has been selected to lead the service and advocacy organization that represents approximately 500 cities and towns across the state.

The Green Forest School District is planning some upgrades to its internet infrastructure. According to superintendent Matt Summers, the project, which will be partially covered by E-rate funding the district received to improve access to information and resources through the internet and approved by the district board during its regular meeting June 20, is a necessary one.

Chad Hipps will continue as president of the Berryville School District Board of Education after a 5-0 vote during the board’s regular meeting on June 20. In addition, Kristi Howerton was elected vice president and Lind Winkle was elected secretary.

Another COVID-related death was reported in Carroll County last week, bringing the number of those who have died from complications related to the novel coronavirus to 106. The additional death was accompanied by another jump in the number of active cases, with 77 reported Friday, June 24, by the Arkansas Department of Health, which reported 59 active cases on June 17.

The Berryville High School Class of 1962 will celebrate its 60th year from graduation with a drop-in from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at the Carroll Electric building in Berryville. Friends of the classmates and adjoining classes are also welcome. Submitted photo
