Dear Mr. Loftis, After reading your editorial of 8-5-25, I began thinking how grateful I am for an honest paper that can keep me up on local events. I am especially glad when you publish the views of people running for office — and the ballots, early enough to pore over them. I’m thankful for the public announcements, and the obituaries — though they don’t always come out in time to attend memorial services. I read the police reports and detention center information. Too often there are familiar names there. It seems odd that many of the people listed are old enough to know better than to get themselves involved with the police. (The only good police involvement is when people do things that help them do their job more safely and efficiently.)
I wish you could have more reporters on the ground to report on all the odd things that happen in the county. I know I’ve driven past an accident or two that I wish I had particulars on later. There’s been a time or two when an article says “continued on p.__” and there is no continuation. Hmm. What happened? I’m glad the grammar and spelling have improved over the previous owners. It would be nice to hear from the sheriff’s department, if only a list of accidents investigated or 911 calls answered — similar to the police list of activity. (I live in the county, not the city.)
Not everything interests me, so I don’t read every word. (I can personally do without most sports reporting, but then I don’t have offspring involved.) I like holding the paper in my hands and perusing it at my leisure. (I’m a dinosaur that still has no internet at home or on phone.) With all the lies and fake news on the internet, it is really nice to have true news, especially now that increased AI is making it easy to produce anything a person can imagine.
Again, thank you for producing a newspaper of real value.
— Karyn Whitley
