Big shots help Gravette get past Bobcats

Posted

A pair of buzzer-beating three-pointers and a fourth-quarter run made the difference for the Gravette Lions in a 53-46 victory over Berryville on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Bobcat Arena.

Gravette hit a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer for a 23-20 lead, then got another three-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter to break a 32-32 tie.

The Lions then outscored Berryville 10-3 to start the fourth quarter, opening up a 10-point lead on the Bobcats.

Berryville started strong, opening the game with an 8-2 run that included a pair of three-pointers from junior Peyton Smith.

After a Gravette three-pointer, Berryville sophomore Carson McMellon hit a turnaround jumper in the lane and Smith followed a transition layup with a pullup jumper from inside the lane for a 14-5 Bobcats lead at the end of the first quarter.

Gravette started the second quarter with a pair of three-pointers and Berryville was held to six points on a three-pointer and two free throws by McMellon and a free throw by sophomore Mason Zogleman. McMellon’s free throws gave Berryville a 20-17 lead with 2:10 left in the first half, but Gravette hit two three-pointers to finish the half with a 23-20 advantage.

McMellon got Berryville within one when he hit a three-pointer midway through the third quarter, then he made two free throws with 2:32 left to tie the score at 30. Two free throws by Smith put the Bobcats ahead 32-30 before Gravette tied it with a layup and then hit the late three-pointer to regain the lead.

A free throw and a three-point play to open the fourth quarter pushed the Lions’ lead to seven at 39-32.

McMellon connected on a three-pointer from the right wing to get the Bobcats back within four, but a Gravette player was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three free throws for a seven- point advantage. Two more Gravette three-pointers, wrapped around a basket by Berryville sophomore Hudson Norris, extended the Lions’ lead to 11.

Still, Berryville kept fighting. Zogleman hit a three-pointer, then Smith dropped in a pair of jumpers to get the Bobcats back within five at 49-44.

Gravette converted four consecutive free throws inside the final minute, however, to clinch the victory.

Smith led Berryville with 21 points while McMellon added 17.

Berryville will host Huntsville on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Bobcat Arena. The Bobcats will play at Green Forest on Wednesday, Jan. 15, in a game that was originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10, but was postponed because of winter weather. On Friday, Jan. 17, Berryville will go on the road to face Gentry.
