The Berryville Bobcats drew two tough assignments to open 4A-1 conference play, facing Prairie Grove and junior standout Kellen Cash and then defending conference champions Shiloh Christian in a four-day span last week.
The bad news for the Bobcats is they’re now 0-2 in the conference. The good news is that two difficult matchups are now behind them.
Cash scored 25 of his 36 points in the second half to lead Prairie Grove to a 71-53 victory over Berryville on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Bobcat Arena. Shiloh Christian then defeated the Bobcats 65-60 on Friday, Dec. 19, in Springdale.
Prairie Grove outscored Berryville 18-7 in the second quarter for a 36-25 halftime lead. The Bobcats trimmed the deficit to eight points by the end of the third quarter, but Cash scored 14 of the Tigers’ 22 fourth-quarter points as Prairie Grove pulled away.
“It’s just a tough matchup for us,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said. “He’s just a good player and every once in a while you’ll face one like that and they’re hard to handle. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to somebody.”
Senior Peyton Smith and junior Hudson Norris led Berryville with 18 points apiece.
On Friday night, Berryville and Shiloh Christian were tied at the end of the third quarter before the Saints pulled out the home victory.
“Shiloh’s really good,” Compton said. “They went undefeated in the league last year and have everybody back. But the last time we played them last year we played them right down to the end and this time we did as well. So hopefully we’re getting closer.”
Smith led Berryville with 20 points while juniors CT Hicks and Mason Zogleman added 14 and 11, respectively.
Berryville will face Cassville at 7:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, in a first-round game in the CS Bank Holiday Hoops tournament at Bobcat Arena.
