Bobcats rebound after back-to-back losses on road

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats suffered their first two losses of the season last week, falling to Bergman 72-45 on Wednesday, Dec. 3, and Haas Hall of Bentonville, 41-39, the following night.

Both games were part of the Duel at the Dome tournament in West Fork. While Berryville coach Brent Compton gave plenty of credit to the Bobcats’ opponents, he also was candid about his team’s performance.

“I just felt like we didn’t play very well the entire week,” Compton said. “I don’t know if it was the travel. I don’t know if it was the lighting in the gym. I don’t know. Bergman is going to win a gazillion games this year and who knows how far they’ll go in the state tournament. They’re really good, but we didn’t play well the entire week.”

The good news for the Bobcats was that they bounced back from the short-lived losing streak to beat Kingston 70-34 in the first round of the 69th Annual Anstaff Bank Holiday Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Green Forest.

“We played OK against Kingston,” Compton said. “I thought the boys played really hard. We were able to play more guys and everybody that came in gave good minutes. I was really proud of our effort.”

Junior Carson McMellon made four three-pointers and scored 17 points in the win over Kingston. Classmate CT Hicks added 11 points and 10 Bobcats got into the scoring column.

Senior Peyton Smith led Berryville with 11 points in the loss to Bergman, while Hicks had 10 against Haas Hall.

Berryville will play Galena, Mo., in the semifinals of the Green Forest tournament at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11. The third-place and championship games are slated for Saturday, Dec. 13.
