Bobcats stumble with back-to-back home losses after 9-game streak

Posted

The Berryville Bobcats won nine consecutive games before a snowstorm left them on the sidelines for more than a week. When they returned to the court over the weekend, they ran into a cold snap of their own.

The Bobcats lost consecutive conference games on back-to-back nights at Bobcat Arena, falling to Gravette 71-58 on Friday, Jan. 30, and to Shiloh Christian 77-56 on Saturday, Jan. 31.

The good news for the Bobcats is that they remain in good position to finish in the top half of the conference standings. Berryville enters action on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in a four-way tie for second place in the 4A-1 with four games remaining.

Berryville (18-8, 6-4 4A-1) is tied with Gravette, Prairie Grove and Pea Ridge. Out of that group, Berryville has just one head-tohead game remaining, at Pea Ridge in the final game of the regular season on Feb. 13. Pea Ridge, on the other hand, faces Gravette, Prairie Grove and conference-leading Shiloh Christian in its next three games.

“If we take care of business, I think we’ll still be the 3 (seed) and that’s a good spot to be,” Berryville coach Brent Compton said, looking toward the district tournament on Shiloh Christian’s campus in Springdale. “If we don’t, if somebody slips up and gets us, then it’s just what it is.”

In the loss to Gravette, Berryville fell behind 19-7 early in the second quarter and trailed by at least seven the rest of the way.

Senior guard Peyton Smith scored 28 points for Berryville on Senior Night — including 14 in the fourth quarter.

Shiloh Christian, which hasn’t lost a conference game in two seasons and has been bolstered the second half of this season by the addition of a Springdale Har-Ber transfer, outscored Berryville 2313 in the second quarter on Saturday for a 12-point halftime lead, then opened that lead to 17 by the end of the third quarter.

Smith led the Bobcats with 20 points, including 13 in the second half.

Berryville travels to Green Forest on Tuesday, Feb. 3, before hosting Huntsville on Friday, Feb. 6, in the Bobcats’ final home game of the season.
