Elkins, ranked among the top Class 4A teams in Arkansas, showed why against Berryville, jumping out to a quick early lead and going on to a 61-0 victory on Friday, Oct. 3, at Bobcat Stadium.
Elkins (4-1, 2-0 4A-1) scored its first touchdown less than three minutes into the game, then quickly added a safety by blocking a Berryville punt out of the back of the end zone.
The Elks led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter, then scored 38 points in the second quarter to open up a 54-0 lead at halftime.
“I think in the first quarter, we put up a pretty good fight in some scenarios,” Berryville coach Macklin Chermak said. “We held them to three and out once or twice, which was pretty good, but then in the second quarter we kind of bottomed out.”
Chermak said the Bobcats are focused on bouncing back.
“There’s nothing that’s out of our reach yet,” he said. “None of our goals are out of our reach yet.”
Berryville (3-2, 0-2) which lost its second consecutive game after a 3-0 start, faces another tough test this week as the Bobcats host Prairie Grove on Friday, Oct. 10, at Bobcat Stadium.
Prairie Grove (2-3, 2-0), which defeated Berryville 62-3 last season, is coming off a 50-13 win over Huntsville last week.
“They’re big, tough, physical,” Chermak said. “I think they’re better than they were last year. The head coach has been there a long time. He’s done an amazing job. We’re going to line up and give it everything we’ve got.”
