The Berryville High School Bobcat Band is already preparing for the upcoming marching band season.
With temperatures in the mid 90’s and the heat index around 100 degrees, the directors and students are doing what they can to stay hydrated while still preparing outside on the marching field. Students will practice six days this summer from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. before school begins on Monday, Aug. 11.
“These are long, hot days but the first parade performance is right around the corner on Saturday Aug. 16 ,” said high school band director Doug Blevins.
The drum major this year is senior saxophone player AC Calvillo. Each practice session, the band will start outside early in the morning, then once the heat index rises, the band will continue indoors with both marching and music fundamentals.
Tonya Blevins directs the rehearsals of the marching band and has every minute of the day planned out, which includes plenty of water breaks and “family time” for the students to connect with each other in small groups.
Churches and business in Berryville provide lunch for the band during the summer practices. Sponsors include New Life Church, JoAnn Clark State Farm, Freeman Heights Baptist, Grandview Baptist, Towering Oaks, Church on the Hill and Equity Bank.
“We are so thankful for the kind and generous churches and business in Berryville for their support of the band,” Doug Blevins said.
The marching band will perform locally in parades and home football games throughout the fall as well as participate in several out-of-town marching competitions.
