Tigers win in dramatic fashion; Bobcats roll in rematch

Posted

The Green Forest Tigers and the Berryville Bobcats split a home-and-home baseball series last week, with each team winning in a different fashion.

On Monday, April 13, Kasen Robinson’s one-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Talon Whetham to lift Green Forest to an 8-7 victory over the visiting Bobcats.

One night later, Berryville got its revenge at home, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruising to an 11-1 win.

Green Forest’s April 13 win was more dramatic. The Tigers trailed 5-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but rallied with four runs to tie the score at 5-5. Isaac Kennedy hit an RBI double to start the rally. After another run scored on an error, Robinson’s two-run single pulled the Tigers even.

Berryville responded with two runs in the top of the fifth. Jordy Casey’s bases-loaded walk force in one run and another scored on a double-play grounder.

Cole Meador’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth pulled Green Forest within one at 7-6, then the Tigers forced extra innings when Colin Atchison singled in the bottom of the seventh and later scored on a ground ball by Hayden Hatman.

Green Forest starting pitcher Radon Lawrence held Berryville to three hits and just one earned run in four innings of work before Atchison pitched the final four innings, also allowing one earned run. Lawrence struck out three batters, while  Atchison recorded five strikeouts.

Berryville starter CT Hicks pitched 5 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out 11 batters and walked one.

Robinson had three hits and drove in three runs for Green Forest. Jace Meador also had three hits for the Tigers, while Atchison and Kennedy scored two runs apiece.

There was little suspense in the rematch at Berryville on Tuesday, April 14. The Bobcats had scored eight runs before there were two out in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of four walks, a hit batsman, an error and four singles.

Hayden Campbell’s RBI single made it 3-0 after a hit batsman and a walk — both with the bases loaded — had forced in Berryville’s first two runs. The Bobcats added another run on an error before Kohen Talley’s two-run single. Hicks followed with an RBI single, and another run scored on an error to make it 8-0.

Whetham scored Green Forest’s only run on a wild pitch in the top of the third, but Berryville responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs – one on a fielder’s choice, one on an error and one on a wild pitch.

Talley’s two hits and two RBI led the Bobcats, while Hicks, Casey and MT Tom scored two runs apiece.

Casey was the winning pitcher, holding Green Forest to one run while allowing four hits in five innings.

Robinson pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief for Green Forest, allowing one hit and two earned runs while striking out six batters.

Both teams went on to pick up victories later in the week.

Bryce Smith scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to lift Berryville to a 9-8 victory at West Fork on Thursday, April 16. The Bobcats had led 8-3 before West Fork rallied with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Cason Willing had three hits and drove in two runs to lead Berryville. Willing closed out the victory with 2 1/3 innings in relief on the mound, retiring seven of the batters he faced, including five strikeouts.

Green Forest collected 18 hits in a 20-10 victory at Bergman on Friday, April 17. Whetham had three hits and drove in a pair of runs while Jace Meador had two hits, scored twice and had two RBI. Robinson had two hits and scored a pair of runs.

Ryne Stone recorded eight strikeouts in three innings on the mound before Gavin Tharp struck out four batters in two innings to finish off the win.
