Huntsville 37, Green Forest 34

The Huntsville Eagles got out of Green Forest with a victory on Halloween night, but not without a fight.

Trailing by three points in the third overtime period, Huntsville scored the game-winning touchdown on a fourthdown run to beat Green Forest 37-34.

With the victory, Huntsville clinched the fifth and final playoff spot from the 4A-1 conference. The loss eliminated Green Forest from playoff contention.

“A team playing for that last playoff spot,” Green Forest coach Dalton Ewing said. “Both teams had to give it their all. It was the kind of game you’d expect for that kind of moment.”

Green Forest sophomore Christian Rosales kicked a 23-yard field goal with one second remaining in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. Another sophomore, quarterback Hadley Maybee, scored from a yard out on fourth down in the first overtime to give the Tigers the lead, but Huntsville answered with a touchdown to tie it, then led off the second overtime with another TD for a 31-24 lead. Green Forest answered to force a third overtime. A botched exchange and a penalty put the Tigers in fourthand- long before a Rosales field goal gave Green Forest a 34-31 lead.

The Tigers’ defense forced Huntsville into a fourth-down situation, but the Eagles converted the game-winning play.

“We held them to fourth down, and they had to make a play there. They made the play,” Ewing said.

Huntsville opened the game with a 63-yard touchdown drive for an early 7-0 lead, but Green Forest junior Hayden Hatman intercepted a pass and returned it 19 yards to the Huntsville 44 early in the second quarter. Two plays later, senior fullback Jaden Kaler appeared to be stopped after a short gain but then broke free and sprinted 39 yards for a touchdown. Rosales’ extra point tied the score at 7-7.

“No one knew what happened on that play,” Ewing said. “Next thing you know, he’s running to the end zone and they called a touchdown.”

Huntsville responded with a field goal before Green Forest senior halfback Gabe Serna got free for a 48-yard touchdown run. Serna had 125 yards rushing for Green Forest.

Huntsville took the lead on a touchdown pass with 3:53 remaining in the fourth quarter, setting up Rosales’ last-second field goal to force overtime.

Junior Jace Meador had 18 tackles to lead the Green Forest defense.

Green Forest will host Berryville in the annual Carroll County Super Bowl on Friday, Nov. 7, at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
