Lady Bobcats adjusting to new offensive philosophy

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats have a different offensive philosophy this season, and coach Daniel Cornelison says the Lady Bobcats will need some time to adjust.

After being heavily dependent on its guards the past few seasons, Berryville has more of an inside presence this season with senior Chaney Fairweather and freshman Ellie Asbury.

“We’re trying to figure out how to work with two post players, coming from a team last year that’s pretty much all guards,” Cornelison said after the Lady Bobcats won two of three games last week. “Just trying to tailor an offense around two post players has at times been a little clunky. Just hasn’t flowed the way I want it to flow yet. But I think we’re getting better.”

Berryville defeated Eureka Springs 64-22 on Monday, Nov. 17, at Bobcat Arena before losing on the road at Lincoln 60-56 the following night.

“We didn’t play very well,” Cornelison said of the loss at Lincoln. “Not taking anything away from Lincoln, but our effort wasn’t what it needed to be. We just dug ourselves a hole. We fought back in the fourth quarter but we had too big a hole against a team that you can’t do that against. They’re very athletic and very physical and all that. They gave us some problems and we didn’t respond like we’re capable of responding.”

Still, there was some benefit to playing a tough game early in the season, Cornelison said.

“We have to play teams like that,” he said. “Playing teams like that makes us better. We’ve got to play teams like that. Our schedule’s pretty tough. There are no easy wins on our schedule. We have to play basketball.”

The Lady Bobcats bounced back with a 46-42 win at Valley Springs on Thursday, Nov. 20.

Fairweather scored 13 points and senior guard Hailey Howerton added 10 to lead 11 Lady Bobcats in the scoring column against Eureka Springs. Howerton scored 17 and Fairweather had 13 in the loss to Lincoln. In the victory at Valley Springs, Fairweather scored 17 points and senior guard Tessa Johnson added 12.

Berryville played at Greenland on Monday, Nov. 24. The Lady Bobcats are the No. 1 seed in the Blue Eye Invitational tournament and will play the Blue Eye junior varsity in a first-round game at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1.
