It took the Berryville Lady Bobcats a little while to put some distance between themselves and the Green Forest Lady Tigers.
But after the Lady Tigers kept things close in the first half, the second half belonged to Berryville.
After leading 23-17 at halftime, the Lady Bobcats tightened up their defense in the second half, holding Green Forest to four points each in the third and fourth quarters and pulling away for a 50-25 victory in a 4A-1 conference game on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Bobcat Arena.
Junior guard Kaylyn Smith scored eight first-quarter points and finished with 15 to lead Berryville. Classmate Tessa Johnson added 11 and another sophomore, point guard Paige Thurman, scored nine for the Lady Bobcats.
Senior point guard Kayla Lozano led Green Forest with 14 points.
Berryville led 18-8 after Thurman made a pair of free throws with 5:28 remaining in the second quarter, but Green Forest closed the first half with a 9-5 run capped by baskets from sophomore Lisbet Rosales and senior Johneese Smalley to pull within six at halftime.
Green Forest bounced back from the loss to Berryville to defeat Gravette 58-40 on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Grim Gym. Senior forward Alyvia Newboles hit four three-pointers and scored 26 points to go with six rebounds for the Lady Tigers.
Berryville suffered a tough loss at Huntsville on Friday, Feb. 7. Smith’s jumper from inside the lane gave the Lady Bobcats a 51-50 lead with 18 seconds remaining, but the Lady Eagles scored off an offensive rebound at the buzzer to grab a 52-51 victory.
Smith scored 15 points and Thurman added 10 for Berryville.
Berryville will host Gentry on Tuesday, Feb. 11, weather permitting, before taking on Pea Ridge at Bobcat Arena on Friday, Feb. 14 in the final game of the regular season.
Green Forest is scheduled to host Prairie Grove on Tuesday, Feb. 11, before closing the regular season on Friday, Feb. 14, facing Shiloh Christian in Springdale.
The district tournament is scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 17, in Huntsville.
