Lady Bobcats repeat themselves

Posted

The Berryville Lady Bobcats won the girls championship in the Anstaff Bank Holiday Tournament at Green Forest for the second consecutive year, defeating Kingston 53-37 in the championship game on Saturday, Dec. 13.

After trailing by one point at halftime, Berryville outscored Kingston 29-12 in the second half to complete a successful defense of its 2024 tournament title.

“I was just really pleased with the effort that the girls played with all week, especially in the championship game,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “That’s what it takes to be successful is just really, really hard work. And they played really hard.”

Senior guard Hailey Howerton scored 14 points to lead the Lady Bobcats. Classmate Tessa Johnson scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half, while senior Chaney Fairweather added 11 points for Berryville.

The Lady Bobcats advanced to the championship game with a hard-fought 57-50 overtime victory over 4A-1 conference rival Huntsville in a semifinal game on Thursday, Dec. 11.

After surrendering an eightpoint lead in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bobcats outscored Huntsville 13-6 in the five-minute overtime period.

“We had three or four offensive possessions where we didn’t execute offense very well and let them back in the ballgame,” Cornelison said. “We’ve got to stay focused on both ends of the floor, and we kind of lost focus offensively there for about three or four possessions and they hit shots on the other end. The next thing you know, it’s a tie ballgame. But we played a really good overtime.”

Fairweather and senior guard Paige Thurman set the tone offensively for Berryville in the extra period, with Thurman scoring eight of her 15 points in overtime.

“Paige played really well in overtime,” Cornelison said.

Fairweather, who finished with 11 points, scored four in overtime and also delivered a key assist when she found Thurman for a three-pointer from the right corner that put the Lady Bobcats up 53-47 with 1:50 remaining.

“Chaney has been so good for us this year,” Cornelison said. “She’s just a hard worker that has put her time in and it has definitely paid off. She’s the poster child for hard work pays off. I’m just so proud of her.”

Howerton led Berryville with 17 points in the win over Huntsville and was named to the all-tournament team, along with Fairweather.

Berryville opens 4A-1 conference play with a pair of games this week — at home against Prairie Grove on Tuesday, Dec. 16, and at Shiloh Christian in Springdale on Friday, Dec. 19.
