Playing a rivalry game in front of a big home crowd at Bobcat Arena, it took the Berryville Lady Bobcats a little while to settle into a rhythm against Green Forest on Friday, Jan. 9.
Eventually, though, the Lady Bobcats shook off the slow start and took control, rolling to a 65-33 victory over the Lady Tigers.
“It was a big crowd and an atmosphere there,” Berryville coach Daniel Cornelison said. “I think we were just a little too wound up and just didn’t executive some of the little things we needed to execute to start the game, especially defensively. But once we kind of got settled in, then we played a lot better.”
After trailing for most of the first quarter, the Lady Bobcats took their first lead of the game when junior Lexy Pittman drove for a layup that put Berryville up 11-10 with 9 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Bobcats then outscored Green Forest 15-2 in the second quarter for a 26-12 halftime lead. Berryville led 50-24 at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Bobcats had four double-digit scorers, led by senior Paige Thurman’s 18 points. Classmates Chaney Fairweather and Tessa Johnson added 14 and 10, respectively, while freshman Ellie Asbury also scored 10 for Berryville.
“We’ve got some kids playing better at some spots, which helps us,” Cornelison said. “Paige has been playing a lot better for us.”
Green Forest senior Kaylyn Smith, in her first season with the Lady Tigers after three years as a starter with Berryville, came out hot against her former team. Smith scored all 10 of Green Forest’s first-quarter points, including eight in the first four minutes. She finished with 16.
“We had a game plan and we just were so jacked up going into the game that we just kind of lost our mind a little bit,” Cornelison said. “I got them refocused a little bit and calmed down. Once we got settled down, it was fine. It was an entire quarter of just trying to settle them down a little bit.”
“We played well early,” said first-year Green Forest coach Jarrett Clibrey. “Turnovers got the best of us, and rebounding. We’ve definitely been playing about a half each game. We’ll play well for a half but we haven’t been able to put three or four quarters together. It’s two quarters here and there.”
Berryville defeated Gravette 58-46 on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The Lady Bobcats showed off their offensive balance in that game as Fairweather scored nine second-half points and finished with a teamhigh 15. Asbury added 14, Thurman scored 13 and senior Hailey Howerton had 12.
Berryville will travel to Huntsville on Tuesday, Jan. 13, for a key 4A-1 conference game after defeating the Lady Eagles in overtime earlier this season in tournament play at Green Forest. The Lady Bobcats will host Gentry on Friday, Jan. 16.
Green Forest, which lost to Pea Ridge 7434 on Jan. 6, will host Gravette on Tuesday and Prairie Grove on Friday at the Grim Gym.
