The Green Forest High School volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season Monday, Oct. 6, winning in three sets at Gentry.
Veteran coach Kristin Whetham, in her first season with the Lady Tigers, is preaching patience as she works to rebuild the program.
“The kids are really receptive,” Whetham said. “I can’t ask any more of them. They’re working hard. But it’s a process. It might be a year or two before we see the results of all the effort and all the work these girls are putting in.”
Green Forest will finish the regular season this week with a pair of conference road matches. The Lady Tigers will play at Berryville on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The district tournament begins Monday, Oct. 13, in Berryville.
Among the players who’ve been productive recently are sophomore Emerson DeMeyer, seniors Elizabeth DeMeyer, Brinly Bishop and Kaylyn Smith and junior Kinly Smith.
“Offensively, we don’t really struggle,” Whetham said. “A lot of these girls have just not worked together. I’m starting a bunch of seniors, but out of those seniors, three of them just moved here. And then I’m also starting a bunch of sophomores who didn’t play with this group last year because they were in junior high. … I wish I could get my seniors back one more year because I think if I had them for a full year, I think this group would really succeed next year. I’m really looking forward to the next couple of years.”
