Dear Editor and everyone reading the Carroll County newspaper, No one’s life is easy. We all have to learn our way in a world many of us don’t recognize anymore. What we need sometimes is a little bit of magic. Or a library.
When I was 8-13 years old, I supervised taking my brothers and sister to the library on the weekend (the Community Room above the public bathrooms). This was staffed by volunteers. The books were donated and the people using it were bibliophiles (they read anything). This small act started my love of reading and books. It was magic for a girl and her siblings when they needed it.
Jump forward to 1983 and being a single mom of three — I needed a well-paying job. I needed a job I could believe in that would help others too. And … magic — I was hired as librarian director. Though the building was great, the funding wasn’t but we worked and grew the library so other sisters could bring their siblings to read on a Saturday afternoon.
My story is not unique. How many of you and your family have found joy, mystery and laughs in a book or program from the library? And, now you can help us turn the page to the Berryville Public Library’s future.
The new library is growing — go see the walls going up! Pigs are flying everywhere! Oink and Hallelujah.
So many in the community have already contributed to make this happen. Friends of the Berryville Library, library staff, businesses, banks, so many generous people and our government have invested in seeing this done.
But, for the library to function as it should, we need help with the final furnishings — bookshelves, storage, CDs, computers, tables, chairs, rugs, toys, prizes. Just about everything to fill the new library is still needed.
I challenge all of you to help this happen. Be the first to donate — pick a specific item to donate toward. Then tell your family this is a part of your donation. Believe me — you will use the library; you will need the library for many reasons and your kids will be smarter. You will be proud to say “I helped build this!” You will love being a part of the magic library story.
The Library is so important! I’ve seen magic happen there in some form every day for my 28 years there and before when I took Mike, Chuck and Betty to the small community room. Libraries make communities special. And each of you as special by making our new library the best it can be. Sincerely, Carol Ann Engskov
