Mandate?

Dear Editor, In response to Ms. Anna Matthews’ letter to the editor, (CCN 6/17/25 edition) writing regarding President Trump, “HE DOES NOT HAVE A MANDATE.”

The Oxford Dictionary’s definition of mandate is, “the authority to do something, given to a government or other organization by the people who vote for it in an election”.

Assuming Ms. Matthews numbers are correct, I would first say that the 90 million eligible voters who did not vote, for whatever reason, allowed the election to be decided by the remaining 152,322,798 American voters who did vote. Their non-voting, essentially, amounted to giving deciding proxy votes to the remaining eligible voters who cast their votes, thus making it impossible to factor in their support of President Trump.

The fact that 3rd party and independent voters chose not to vote for President Trump or Kamala Harris does not indicate the degree of support they currently have for either President Trump or Kamala Harris.

Very relevant numbers, regarding the 2024 Presidential election, should include the fact that the Electoral College vote total (538) gave President Trump 312 electoral votes, which is 58 percent, compared to 226 which Kamala Harris received, which is 42 percent.

Out of the seven “swing states”, President Trump swept all seven. Some would choose to believe that seven out of seven indicates a mandate.

To achieve equitable Presidential election results, our Founding Fathers, with their genius, created The Electoral College to govern our great nation of The United States of America.

I believe that receiving 58 percent of the electoral college votes is a clear mandate for President Trump.
