Typically, the last two or three weeks of one year and the first two or three weeks of the next make for a slow news cycle. Sometimes, filling up the paper during those few weeks can be a challenge — although thankfully, that’s not the case this week.
After almost 40 years as a professional journalist, I’ve learned not to complain about “no news.” Soon enough, there will be more things going on than we can keep up with.
The last time I did complain about not having any news to cover was in January 2020. We all know how that turned out.
I feel blessed every day to live in such a vibrant community as Carroll County, where it seems as if there is always an event, or a meeting, or a ballgame or some other thing going on that is interesting and newsworthy. And after spending the first 25 years of my career almost exclusively at larger daily newspapers, I absolutely love the diverse assignments that come with working at a smaller paper.
Earlier today, I covered a court hearing in a murder case. After that, I spoke with some local basketball coaches. Tomorrow night, I’ll cover a quorum court meeting and hopefully a city council meeting, then go to a basketball game.
In between all that, I’m working on page design and coordinating with reporter Rick Harvey on his coverage. Over the weekend I helped finish up the January issue of Eureka! Magazine. Later this week, I’ll put together our sister newspaper, the Eureka Springs Times-Echo. And I have an investigative story on the back burner that could be coming to a slow boil soon.
That’s the kind of diversity you don’t get to experience at a daily paper, where you’re pigeonholed into one role.
Of course, all that can seem overwhelming at times. But I like to remind myself of something I heard a football coach say once that has stuck with me. I don’t have to do all that. I get to do it.
For that, I am grateful. Even when things slow down just a bit.
