The Green Forest Tigers finished their game against Greenland on Friday, Sept. 19, with zero passing yards.
But you won’t hear any complaints from first-year Green Forest coach Dalton Ewing after the Tigers rolled to a 42-26 victory in front of a home crowd at Tiger Stadium.
“It was a heck of a win,” Ewing said. “We had 373 yards and didn’t throw one pass.”
Junior Ywa Hay Moo ran for a pair of touchdowns and senior Gabe Serna added 161 yards and a touchdown out of the Tigers’ Wishbone offense and junior Casey Jones forced a fumble while sacking Greenland’s quarterback and recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown that put the Tigers up 21-0 midway through the second quarter.
Moo scored Green Forest’s first two touchdowns on runs of 11 and 57 yards. Greenland got within 21-13 in the second half before a 6-yard TD run by Green Forest senior Jadon Ochoa.
Serna had a 24-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and senior quarterback Ryne Stone scored the Tigers’ final TD on a 1-yard keeper.
Green Forest, which won its second consecutive game after a season-opening loss to Hollister, Mo., opens conference play on Friday, Sept. 26, hosting Prairie Grove. Ewing said the Green Forest players have bought in to his message.
“They’re fired up,” Ewing said of the Tigers. “They’re believing right now.”
A traditional 4A-1 powerhouse, Prairie Grove is 0-3 but the losses have come to Class 5A Farmington and a pair of Oklahoma teams.
“They’re going to be Prairie Grove,” Ewing said. “They’re going to run the ball and be physical and we have to match it.”
Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
