Russell, other local athletes qualify for state meet

Green Forest senior Lydia Russell won three events in the 4A-1 district track and field championships on Friday, May 2, at Gentry High School.

Russell won the girls 100-meter dash in a school-record time of 12.89 seconds. She also crossed the finish line first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.48) and the 300-meter hurdles (48.05).

For good measure, Russell finished third in the 200-meter dash (28.53).

Russell, who already owns five state championships in four events, has qualified for this year’s Class 4A state meet in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and the long jump. The state meet will be held Tuesday, May 6, at Heber Springs.

The Lady Tigers’ Haddasah Reyes finished fifth in the discus (90 feet, 8 inches) at the district meet.

On the boys side, Green Forest senior Arauny Reyes won the 3,200-meter run in 10:24.60. Reyes, who has won state titles in the 1,600 both indoors and outdoors, was second in that event at the district meet with a time of 4:48.86. He was third in the 800-meter run (2:05.80).

Green Forest sophomore Ywa Hay Moo finished second in the 300-meter hurdles (44.27), and fourth in both the 100-meter dash (11.75) and the 110-meter hurdles (17.19).

Berryville sophomore Kinly Smith won the girls shot put with a heave of 32 feet, 11.5 inches and took fourth place in the discus at 92-6. Her older sister, junior Kaylyn Smith took second place in the 200-meter dash (28.06) and third in the 400 (1:03.37).

Lady Bobcats sophomore Kai Killingsworth placed third in the 1,600-meter run (6:09.31).

Berryville’s 4X400-meter relay team of Chaney Fairweather, Cara Summers, Marcella Gray and Kaylyn Smith took third place (4:35.28) and will compete at the state meet.

Berryville senior Malachi Houghton took fifth place in the boys 1,600 (4:57.51) and 3,200 (11:00.74).
