Posted

Officially, the track and field meet held Friday, April 11, at Green Forest High School was named the Anstaff Relays. For all practical purposes, however, it was the Lydia Russell Runaway.

Russell, the Green Forest senior who already has five state championships to her credit, competed in six individual events in the Anstaff Relays. She won all six and scored a school-record 60 points as the Lady Tigers finished second in the team standings.

Russell won the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.98 and 28.02 seconds, respectively. She then won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.98 and 50.79, took first place with a long jump of 15 feet, 5 inches and won the triple jump at 33-1.

Russell won four Class 3A state titles as a sophomore in 2023, taking gold in the 100and 300-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She won her second consecutive state title in the 100-meter hurdles in 2024 and set a school record while finishing second in the 300 hurdles. She has prequalified to compete in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles in this year’s Class 4A state championships.

Russell wasn’t the only Lady Tiger to win an event in the Anstaff Relays. Teammate Mistie Hughes took first place in the pole vault (6-6), while Haddasah Reyes won the discus (87-5). Reyes took fourth place in the shot put (24-0). Emily Sales finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run (7:55.29) while teammate Elena Quiroz was fifth (8:16.07). Green Forest finished third in the 4X200 relay (2:22.29).

Green Forest won the boys team championship with nine first-place finishes, led by sophomore Ywa Hay Moo. Moo won the 100-meter dash (11.72), the 110-meter hurdles (17.69) and the long jump (198). He finished second in the triple jump (37-9) and third in the 200-meter dash (24.93).

Senior Arauny Reyes, who won the Class 3A state championship in the 1,600-meter run last year, won that event at the Anstaff Relays in a time of 4:44.11 and also won the 800 (2:17.57). Senior Isiah Lopez won the discus (121-6) and sophomore Silas Sparkman won the shot put (39-0). Sophomore DJ Rang won the pole vault (8-0). Green Forest also won the 4X100 relay (48.49).

Senior Gabe Serna was second in the 100-meter dash (12.00), third in the 110-meter hurdles (18.73) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (26.22). Sophomore Grady Massengale finished second in the discus (108-6), third in the 800 (2:30.61) and fifth in the high jump (5-0). Rang took fourth place in the 300-meter hurdles (53.88) and fifth in the triple jump (32-10).
