Spring concert concludes community band season

Posted

The Carroll County Community Band ended its’ season Sunday, April 27 at the Berryville High School Performing Arts Center.

The concert was presented in memory of clarinet player and retired Green Forest band director Paul Mc-Bride.

The concert featured a selection commissioned by the band, titled “Our Country, Our Freedom.” The composition was written by Gary Gackstatter.

The band’s mission is for adult musicians in the area to mentor the high school musicians in Carroll County through weekly rehearsals. They spend their season gaining sponsors to send the students to summer music camp, which often costs $500 per student.

“It’s exciting to be able to send students to summer music camp, who will create memories and musical experiences that will last their entire lifetime,” said Jim Swiggart, director and founder of the band.

Each year the band raises nearly $10,000 and spends that money on students in our county to help relieve the expense of the summer camps.

This year sponsors included: Arkansas Community Foundation, Jerry and Sallie Pittman, Mike and Susan Reed, Force Shield Tornado Doors, Marty and Darlene Strough, David and Lisa Ward, Roger and Rita Parker, Holiday Island Elks Lodge 1042, Opera in the Ozarks, Holiday Island Rotary, Vito’s Italian Restaurant, Fredo’s Mexican Grill, Rocky and Carol Casey, Jack and Wendy Haynes, Mark and Sandy Cesar, Daniel and Kristi Rodriguez, Sandra Young, M. L. Benson, Janet Nies, Bay Realty, Equity Bank, Doug and Tonya Blevins, Barbara Aldrich, Susan Stewart, Scott Duhamel, Dawn Brown and Jim and Janice Swiggart.

“We are very thankful for the businesses and individuals who support our mission and help our students attend camp,” said Doug Blevins, Berryville High School band director and co-conductor of the community band. “This year we will send 17 students from school band programs in Carroll County on a full scholarship. That’s incredible!”

Anyone who would like to sponsor a student or make a donation to the band may send it to Carroll County Community Band, 902 W. Trimble, Berryville, AR 72616. The band is a 501(c) (3) organization and donations are tax-deductible.

The band is off for the summer and will reconvene in September to begin fundraising efforts for a new group of students to continue making musical memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
