Tigers continue rebuilding effort

Posted

The Green Forest Tigers are admittedly in rebuilding mode under first-year coach Ben McBryde.

The Tigers lost all three of their games in last week’s annual CS Bank Holiday Hoops tournament at Bobcat Arena, but McBryde saw flashes of potential — especially late in Green Forest’s 61-51 loss to Valley Springs in the seventh-place game on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

“Every time we play a game, it’s a learning moment for us, just because we’re still learning how to play,” McBryde said. “That last game, we were down 17 and didn’t have one of our better players and we came back and cut it to six with 2:14 to go in the game. For us to be able to do that, I was really proud of them.”

Junior Jace Meador led the Tigers with 17 points in the loss to Valley Springs, while classmate Grady Massengale added 11.

Green Forest lost to Bauxite 83-50 in the first round of the tournament on Monday, Dec. 29, despite 17 points from Massengale and 14 from Briceston Henson, then fell to Mountain View 5929 the next day. Meador had 11 points in that game and Massengale added 10.

“It’s just a matter of finding consistency with kids that are young and inexperienced and trying to build on that,” McBryde said.

Green Forest’s girls finished seventh in the Holiday Hoops tournament, bouncing back from losses to Cassville and Mountain Pine in the first two rounds to defeat Alpena 56-41 on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Greeen Forest will play two conference road games this week, traveling to Pea Ridge on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and Berryville on Friday, Jan. 9.
